Warden Nicky on winter wildfires

My first woodlark singing

It was wonderful to hear woodlarks singing this morning! I’m always excited by the start of another bird nesting season. But in less optimistic news, there’s been two serious wildfires on the heaths this week, one at Chobham Common on Monday afternoon, and last night at Caesar’s Camp near Farnham too.

The first wildfire of the year, taken by Warden Tim on Monday evening

As a warden on the Thames Basin Heaths, wildfire education is a big part of my job, but even I was taken aback when I saw reports of our first heathland wildfires of the year. I took to Facebook to share the terrifying photos, and my dismay. A relative commented, “but how?”!

Having worked on heathland for a number of years and been on many wildfire training sessions, I understand the factors that can come together to make wildfires all too common, even in winter…

Lack of rain? Check.
Wind to help spread the flames? Check.
Dry grass and bracken in supply? Check.

Dry grasses are perfect fuel for wildlife, even in winter

Don’t be under any illusion, winter can still mean wildfire!

So do please help me spread the word…always be wildfire aware. Please, no fires or BBQs, ensure cigarettes are out and take all litter home. All fires, no matter how small, should be reported to 999. Your swift action could be vital. More here.
