Where you’ll find it…
Find the free car park on Hyde End Lane (close to junction with Church Lane), Ryeish Green, nearest postcode RG7 1EP. Grid reference SU 71895 67919. What3Words: tower.lucky.appear. May be closed overnight, please refer to signage displayed at the entrance.
N.B. We’ve given the nearest postcode, but recommend using the links to look up the exact location. The centre of a postcode may be up to half a mile from your destination.
What you’ll find there…
Wildflower meadows to explore close to Shinfield and Spencers Wood. If you haven’t been here before, be sure to investigate the meadows on either side of Hyde End Lane. An obvious paths takes you from the car park into the adjacent land, but there are fields to discover on the other side of the road too.
Technically, the land adjacent to the car park is called The Ridge and is managed by the University of Reading, and May’s Farm Meadows starts on the opposite side of Hyde End Lane. It doesn’t make much difference on the ground though and there are numerous ways to link the greenspaces in this area. Use the ‘See route…’ button above to take you to details of a 5.5km circular walk taking in May’s Farm Meadows, Parklands (a small green area for Taylor Wimpy’s Stanbury development), Clares Green Field and Five Acre Field. You can extend this further by walking all the way to Langley Mead, making an interesting 8.8km circular route with only one busy road to cross.
We’ve enjoyed impressive flocks of over 50 goldfinch working their way through these meadows! Do look out for them, they’re very striking, especially if you have a pair of binoculars to appreciate their fabulous colours.
Note: Dog walkers may like to know that the area is sometimes grazed. There are no streams or ponds and limited shade.
